Source Alignment Map

How the Four Sources Align

Each Cleantech Taxonomy sector draws from multiple upstream sources. This map shows where sources overlap, where they diverge, and where CTH extensions fill gaps none of them cover.

Sector-by-Sector Alignment

Energy Systems (ES)

CPI GLCFEU TaxonomyIEA ETCSCBICTH Extensions
Energy Systems sector — renewable generation, grids, storage, fossil fuel transitionClimate Mitigation: Energy (generation, transmission, storage)Energy Supply + Cross-Cutting (full technology-level depth)Energy sector criteria (solar, wind, geothermal, bioenergy, storage)CT-EX-010 Pico-solar, CT-EX-012 Artisanal cleantech, CT-EX-013 Productive energy use

Convergence: All 4 sources cover core renewables (solar, wind, hydro, geothermal, biomass). IEA provides deepest technology-level granularity. CBI adds bond eligibility criteria. Gap: None of the 4 sources adequately cover off-grid/informal economy energy access — CTH fills this with 3 extension nodes.

Transport (TR)

CPI GLCFEU TaxonomyIEA ETCSCBICTH Extensions
Transport sector — road, rail, maritime, aviationClimate Mitigation: Transport activitiesEnd-Use: Transport (EVs, H2 vehicles, fuel cells)Transport criteria (rail, EVs, maritime, cycling)None — adequately covered

Convergence: Strong overlap across all 4 sources on EVs, rail, and modal shift. Gap: Micro-mobility (e-bikes, 3-wheelers) covered by CBI but underrepresented in CPI and IEA.

Buildings & Infrastructure (BU)

CPI GLCFEU TaxonomyIEA ETCSCBICTH Extensions
Buildings & Infrastructure sectorClimate Mitigation: Buildings (new + renovation)End-Use: Buildings (heat pumps, efficiency)Buildings criteria (efficiency, certification)None — adequately covered

Convergence: All 4 cover energy efficiency and green construction. EU Taxonomy most prescriptive (TSC thresholds). Gap: Affordable/social green housing only in CBI; transport infrastructure sits between BU and TR sectors.

Industry (IN)

CPI GLCFEU TaxonomyIEA ETCSCBICTH Extensions
Industry sector — manufacturing, heavy industry, hydrogenClimate Mitigation: ManufacturingEnd-Use: Industry (electrification, H2, CCS) + Critical MineralsIndustry criteria (cement, steel, chemicals)None — adequately covered

Convergence: Hard-to-abate (steel, cement, chemicals) covered by all. IEA adds critical minerals depth. Gap: Light manufacturing in LATAM context not well covered by any source.

AFOLU (AF)

CPI GLCFEU TaxonomyIEA ETCSCBICTH Extensions
AFOLU sector — agriculture, forestry, land use, fisheriesClimate Mitigation: Forestry & environmental protection; Biodiversity objectiveN/A (energy-focused)Land Use, Marine Resources & BiodiversityCT-EX-001 to CT-EX-009 (adaptation, NbS, bioeconomy) + CT-EX-018 to CT-EX-021 (EUDR supply chain)

Convergence: CPI, EU Taxonomy, and CBI all cover forestry/reforestation. Major gap: IEA has zero AFOLU coverage. None of the 4 sources cover smallholder adaptation, community reforestation, silvopastoral systems, PES platforms, or EUDR compliance services — CTH fills this with 13 extension nodes, the largest gap category.

Waste (WA)

CPI GLCFEU TaxonomyIEA ETCSCBICTH Extensions
Waste sectorClimate Mitigation: Water, Sewerage & Waste; Circular Economy objectiveN/AWaste & Pollution ControlNone

Water & Wastewater (WW)

CPI GLCFEU TaxonomyIEA ETCSCBICTH Extensions
Water & Wastewater sectorWater & Marine Resources objectiveN/AWater criteria (treatment, efficiency, flood resilience)None

ICT & Cross-Sectoral (IC, XS)

CPI GLCFEU TaxonomyIEA ETCSCBICTH Extensions
ICT & Digitalization + Cross-sectoralICT activities (Climate Mitigation)Cross-Cutting Technologies (smart grids, digitalization)N/A (no ICT criteria)CT-EX-014 to CT-EX-017 (satellite monitoring, AI MRV, traceability, precision ag data)

Gap: Carbon markets and climate finance platforms not covered by any of the 4 sources as technology categories. CTH adds 4 AI/MRV extensions.
